From Shantaram to City of Joy

A book you definately have to read is 'Shantaram'! The opening of the book is amazing and from then on the only thing you want to do is read every page of this book without stopping!

It is a true story which you can compare with 'Papillon'. It's about an australian guy who escaped from prison in Australia and went to Bombay. The moment he arrived in Bombay he loved this city (like I had with Calcutta). One day he got robbed and lost everything. He decided to live in the slums of Bombay and ended up working for the Bombay underworld.

Gregory David Roberts sold the filmrights of his book to Brad Pitt. He is now writing the screenplay for the movie.

For more information see the offcial website.

And from Shantaram I moved on to 'The City of joy'. Maybe you know this book or the film (with Patrick Swayze and OmPuri, Shabanna Azmi etc.) which did make a lot of people cry. It is about a peasant family in Bihar who lost all their property and finally decided to go to Kolkata to find work.

Dear Mila,
Where are you now? Kolkatta, City of Joy, whatever that is?
Everything okay with you i hope. My parents went friday the17 tot surinam. Nanda and her family are there too, but they weren't informed of the coming of our parents. It was a surprise. Can you imagine that. In the evening, my parents waiting in the house with the lights on. Nanda en fam. coming home and see that the lights are on, the door is open. They asked each other, have forgotten to close the door, switch of the lights? And then walking carefully in the house, my father hidden in a room make scarey noises, etc. etc. Just like in a movie or book!
It was a huge surprise. Tuesday Nanda will be back in Holland and my parents will be back in october.
In Drachten everythings goes as it goes. Rajiv will be back today from his holiday from Rimini. I like to hear how it was, but i know he will not everything to his mum.
Till next time. Have a pleasant stay wherever you are.
Asha
